• Timing Chain Rattle, N14 and N18

  The defining MINI fault. A rattle on cold start from a worn chain and tensioner, and on the earlier engines the guides shed material into the oil. It is the first thing we listen for on any Cooper S coming in, because it is far cheaper to address at the noise than after a guide breaks up.

• Thermostat Housing and Cooling

  The thermostat housing and water pump are a known weak point across the MINI range. We replace the housing rather than only the thermostat, because doing the cheap part first usually means paying the labor twice.

  Plastic thermostat housings crack and the electric water pump fails, often together. On a small turbocharged engine a cooling fault escalates quickly, so we replace housing and pump as one job rather than chasing the cheaper part first.

• High Pressure Fuel Pump

  HPFP failure produces long cranking, a rough cold start and a limp mode under load. It is a known item on the turbocharged cars and easy to misdiagnose as an ignition fault, so we test fuel pressure before anyone replaces coils or plugs.

• VANOS Solenoids and Variable Valve Timing

  Sticking solenoids trigger timing correlation codes and rough running. Cleaning or replacing the solenoids often resolves what looks like a much bigger timing problem, which is worth checking before anyone opens the front of the engine.

• Oil Filter Housing Gasket

  A very common oil leak, and because the leak lands on the belt and the subframe it often gets blamed on something else. The gasket is inexpensive; the misdiagnosis is not.

• Clutch and Manual Gearbox

  MINIs get driven hard and clutches wear accordingly. We check the slave cylinder and the master before condemning the clutch, because a hydraulic fault produces the same symptoms for a fraction of the cost.

• Automatic Transmission Fluid Service

  The automatic is described as sealed for life. Fluid and filter service noticeably improves shift quality on higher mileage cars and is far cheaper than a valve body.

MINI publishes a long oil interval and we shorten it on turbocharged cars, because these engines are hard on oil and the timing chain depends on it.
